Filmmaker Notes
More About Superstar from Director Naiquan Greene
I was inspired by the people around me to make this film. Most of my immediate family members had aspirations to do great things in life that they were never able to achieve, such as becoming a reporter or an architect. My family’s failed attempts to reach their goals prepared me for any obstacles in the future that might prevent me from achieving my own goals. I wanted to document this and make a heartfelt film that I, and others, could enjoy… and I think I did!
Since making my film, my family has supported me by showing more interest in films and filmmaking as a whole. When my friends and schoolmates saw my film, they respected me for going out into the world and putting effort towards accomplishing goals I have had for years. In school, I am now known as the “film major.” Ironically, making my film led me to choose to major in economics and communications in college while still pursuing filmmaking, acting and writing.
FILMMAKER BIOS
Naiquan Green, Director
Born in Brooklyn and raised in various boroughs of New York, Naiquan Greene, at age 17, has already overcome much adversity. After being turned down for one internship, he found Reel Works Teen Filmmaking where he made his first documentary, Superstar. Naiquan’s next journey involves attending college at DePauw University this fall. Naiquan is currently working on his second documentary in the master class at Reel Works. Not bad for a soon-to-be college freshman!
Reel Works Teen Filmmaking
Reel Works Teen Filmmaking is centered on the conviction that every young person has a story to tell and an important contribution to make to our world. We believe that filmmaking holds within it essential disciplines of literacy, communication, creative and critical thinking, storytelling and teamwork that young people need in order to effectively express their unique visions. In the process they gain self-esteem, master state-of-the-art technology and are transformed from passive consumers to active creators of media. We say to teens: You have a voice. Use it!
Founded in 2001 at the Prospect Park YMCA, where we continue to make our home, Reel Works is a full-time nonprofit arts organization that serves over 150 teens each year through four core programs: The Lab, The Lab Master Class, Reel Impact and Teen Film Camp.
